Resize video for YouTube

YouTube wants two shapes: 16:9 for the main site and 9:16 for Shorts. Both are presets here, and you can pull a thumbnail out of the same project.

Open Video Studio — it’s free

Your video never leaves your device. There is no upload, no queue and no server copy. Free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no export limit.

What you can do

1080p and Shorts

1920 × 1080 for a standard upload, 1080 × 1920 for Shorts — the same source can produce both.

Thumbnails from the video

Extract any frame as a PNG or JPG, at the project size, with any text you added already on it.

Fit rather than crop

When the source is nearly 16:9, "Fit with bars" keeps the whole picture without cutting into it.

Export high

YouTube re-encodes everything you upload. Give it the best source you can.

Questions

What resolution should I upload to YouTube?

1920 × 1080 is the practical standard. YouTube accepts more, but it re-encodes everything anyway, and 1080p is what the great majority of viewers are served.

What size is a YouTube Short?

1080 × 1920, 9:16 — the same as Reels and TikTok. Shorts must also be 3 minutes or shorter.

How do I make a thumbnail from my video?

Move the playhead to the frame you want, then choose "Still" in the export dialog. It saves at the project size, with any text or overlays you added.

Should I export at the highest quality?

Yes. YouTube compresses every upload, so anything you save at this stage is taken out of the picture twice.

Can I upload a vertical video to the main site?

You can, but it will be pillarboxed with grey bars either side. Post vertical video as a Short instead.
