iPhone & iPad

Open the Camera app and point it at the code. Tap the Join WiFi Network banner at the top. Works from the lock screen, iOS 11 and later.

Android

Open the Camera app or Google Lens and point it at the code, then tap the network prompt. On Android 9 and older, use the QR button in Settings → Network & internet → WiFi.

Laptop or desktop

Desktop operating systems do not join WiFi from a QR code. Scan it with a phone, or read the password off the printed card and type it in.

There is no button here that connects you, because no browser is allowed to change your WiFi. Any page offering one is either opening your settings app or pretending.

Your WiFi password stays private

A WiFi QR code contains your password in plain text. That is how the standard works — the phone needs it to join. So the only question that matters is who else sees it, and the answer here is nobody.

  • Encoded on your device

    The QR code is drawn by JavaScript in this tab. There is no server that generates it and none that could.

  • Never uploaded

    No request carries your network name or password. Open your browser's network panel and check — that is the point of saying it.

  • Never in the address bar

    Nothing is written to the URL, so your password cannot end up in browser history, a bookmark or a shared link.

  • Never saved

    Only your colour and shape choices are remembered between visits. Credentials are deliberately left out of that.

  • Never in analytics

    We count page views. No event on this page carries a field you typed.

  • Camera closes itself

    The scanner releases the camera the instant it reads a code, and again if you switch tabs. Frames are never recorded.

One honest caveat, since it is the thing people get wrong: a printed WiFi card is readable by anyone who can photograph it. The privacy guarantee is about this website, not about the wall you tape it to. For a network you care about, use your router's guest network and put that password on the card instead.

How to create a WiFi QR code

    Enter your network name

    Copy the SSID exactly as your phone shows it. Case matters, spaces matter, and a trailing space you cannot see is the single most common reason a WiFi QR code fails.

    Pick the security type

    WPA/WPA2/WPA3 covers essentially every router made this century. WEP is for genuinely old equipment. Open is for a network with no password at all.

    Add the password

    It goes straight into the code, never to a server. Semicolons, colons, quotes and backslashes are escaped for you, so an awkward password is not a problem.

  4. 04

    Test it before you print

    Point your own phone at the code on screen. If it offers to join, everything after this is just formatting. If it does not, check the SSID for typos first.

    Download or print

    PNG for screens and small prints, SVG for anything larger than a postcard. Or pick a card template and print a finished sign.

    Put it where it gets used

    Eye level, out of direct glare, and big enough — roughly 1 cm of code for every 25 cm of scanning distance. Behind glass on a reception desk is the usual failure.

What is a WiFi QR code?

A WiFi QR code is an ordinary QR code that holds one short line of text in a format phones recognise. It looks like this:

T is the security type, S the network name, P the password and H whether the network is hidden. When a camera decodes text starting with WIFI:, the operating system offers to join that network instead of opening a browser. There is no lookup, no account and no service in the middle — everything the phone needs is in the code itself, which is why a WiFi QR code still works years later and keeps working if the site that made it disappears.

The format came out of the ZXing project and was adopted by Android and then iOS. It is not a formal internet standard, which is why the details matter: characters like ; and : have to be escaped inside the values or the phone reads the password as the end of the field. This generator handles that for you, and the scanner on this page reads it back the same way.

How to connect to WiFi with a QR code

On any iPhone running iOS 11 or later, open the Camera app and hold it over the code. A banner slides down saying Join WiFi Network; tap it and you are on. You do not need to take a photo, open an app or unlock into anything — it works from the lock screen.

Android 10 and later behave the same way through the built-in camera or Google Lens. On Android 9 and earlier there is no camera integration, but the WiFi settings screen has its own scanner: go to Settings → Network & internet → WiFi, tap Add network, and use the QR icon next to the name field. Most Android phones can also generate a code for the network they are already on from the same screen, which is a quick way to check that yours matches.

Laptops are the gap. Neither Windows, macOS nor most Linux desktops will join a network from a QR code, so if guests bring laptops, print the password as text on the card as well. That is what the print the password option on the card designer is for.

Where a WiFi QR code earns its keep

The pattern is always the same: somewhere a password gets read out loud several times a day, and gets typed wrong about a third of those times.

WiFi QR codes for hotels

A card on the desk or inside the welcome folder removes the most repeated question at the front desk, and it removes it in every language your guests speak. Put the QR on the same card as the room number and the checkout time and it gets read. If your property runs a per-room or per-stay password, generate a fresh code when the password rotates — it takes about fifteen seconds and the old cards simply stop working, which is the behaviour you want.

WiFi QR codes for restaurants

Tape it to the inside of the menu, or print it as a small table tent. Restaurants have the strongest case for a guest network with a separate password: the code will be photographed by strangers, and you do not want the network holding your card terminal behind the same key. A short, friendly SSID also helps, because guests glance at the network name to check they joined the right one.

WiFi QR codes for cafes

Cafes are where people sit down and open a laptop, so this is the one setting where printing the password as text next to the code genuinely matters — laptops cannot scan. Keep the card near the counter rather than on each table; it stays cleaner and people expect to look for it while they wait. Matte card stock beats a laminated sheet, because gloss under a spotlight defeats phone cameras.

WiFi QR codes for Airbnb and short lets

Guests arrive tired, often late, and frequently with a phone on the last of its battery. A framed card by the door is the highest-value five minutes of setup in the whole property, and it heads off the message at eleven at night asking for the password. Add it to your digital guidebook as an image too: a guest reading the guidebook on their phone can screenshot the code and scan it from another device.

Meeting rooms are the obvious place — a visitor should not need to find someone to get online before a presentation. Use the guest VLAN, not the staff network, and treat the printed code as a credential that needs rotating on the same schedule as the password behind it. A code stuck on a wall in 2021 with a password nobody has changed since is a genuine finding in a security review.

WiFi QR codes for guest networks

Almost every router made in the last decade can run a second network with its own name and password, isolated from the devices on your main one. That is the right thing to put behind a QR code, at home or in a business. It means a scanned code gives someone the internet and nothing else — not your network drive, not your printer, not the camera in the hallway.

WiFi QR codes at home

Home passwords tend to be the long random string printed on the underside of the router, which is precisely the kind of thing nobody wants to read out character by character. A small card in the hallway or on the fridge solves it permanently, and it works for babysitters, relatives and trades without you having to be there.

WiFi QR codes for events and conferences

Print the code on the badge, the lanyard insert or the back of the programme, and repeat it on the slides between sessions. Attendees join in the first minute rather than during the opening talk. For venue WiFi you do not control, ask for the guest credentials in advance and generate the code yourself — venues rarely have one ready, and the alternative is a password projected on a screen at the back of a room.

WiFi QR codes for shops and salons

Customers who stay connected stay longer, and a code at the till or in the waiting area costs nothing to put up. Keep the SSID recognisably yours — a guest looking at a list of nearby networks should be able to tell which one is the shop they are standing in.

WiFi QR codes for schools and clinics

Both have the same shape of problem: a lot of visitors, a network that must stay separated from sensitive systems, and staff who should not be spending their day on connection support. A printed guest code in reception and in waiting areas handles it. Keep the clinical or administrative network well away from anything printed.

Why use a WiFi QR code at all?

The obvious benefit is that nobody types anything, which matters more than it sounds. A modern WPA2 password is long and deliberately unmemorable, and typing it into a phone keyboard is where the mistakes happen. A code removes the transcription step entirely, and with it the round of "is that a capital I or a lowercase L".

It also removes the moment where the password is read out across a room. Saying it aloud in a busy cafe reaches more people than the QR code on the counter ever will, and a code lets you use a longer, stronger password than you would ever be willing to dictate.

Finally, it looks finished. A printed card with your own wording and colours reads as somewhere that has thought about the guest, in a way that a password biroed onto a Post-it does not. That is a small thing, but it is the first thing a guest touches.

The trade-off is worth stating plainly: the password is in the code in the clear, and a code on a wall is a password on a wall. Use a guest network, rotate it when it makes sense, and the trade is a good one.

Does a WiFi QR code work on Android?

Can I generate a QR code for a hidden WiFi network?

Yes. Turn on the Hidden network switch and the code will include the hidden flag, which tells the phone to search for a network that is not broadcasting its name. Without that flag most phones will scan the code and then report that the network cannot be found.

Can I download the WiFi QR code?

Yes, as a PNG at up to 2048 pixels or as an SVG. The SVG is vector, so it stays sharp at any size — use it if the code is going on a poster, a menu or anything printed larger than a postcard. You can also export a finished WiFi card as a PNG or a PDF.

Can I print a WiFi QR code?

Yes. Pick one of the 15 card templates, edit the heading and the message, and print it directly or save it as a PDF. Print the QR code at least 3 cm across for a card people hold, and larger for anything read from across a room — roughly 1 cm of code for every 25 cm of scanning distance.

Can a website automatically scan nearby WiFi networks?

No, and no browser is planning to allow it. A list of nearby network names is enough to locate a device to within a few metres, so scanning is restricted to the operating system behind a permission prompt. Any site claiming to show you nearby networks is either guessing from your IP address or making it up. The Network Information API comes closest and it only describes the connection you already have, never its name.
